Microsoft to permanently close all of its retail stores

Microsoft on Friday announced a strategic change in its retail operations. The sofware gigant will permanently close its 83 Microsoft Store retail locations. The company’s stores were temporarily shuttered in late March in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the pandemic now provided a good opportunity to face that fact and throw in the towel.

It will keep its London; New York City; Sydney, Australia and Redmond, Washington locations, but they will be reimagined as „experience centers,“ the company stated. The closures are expected to result in a charge to the company of $450 million.

“Our sales have grown online as our product portfolio has evolved to largely digital offerings, and our talented team has proven success serving customers beyond any physical location,” David Porter, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President, said in a statement. “We are grateful to our Microsoft Store customers and we look forward to continuing to serve them online and with our retail sales team at Microsoft corporate locations.”
