Multi Development wins double victory at RTPI Planning Awards for Victoria Square Regeneration Project
Multi Development UK opened Victoria Square on 6 March 2008. First Minister, The Rt. Hon. Dr I R K Paisley MP MLA, the Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness MP MLA and the Minister for Social Development Margaret Ritchie MLA officiated at the ceremony. This highly acclaimed, and previously awarded, retail-led mixed-use scheme encompasses 800,000 sq ft (75,000 sq m) of new retail, leisure and living space in the centre of Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland.
Multi’s in-house architects, T+T Design created a new urban area, with the new streets and buildings forming a harmonious whole with those already existing. A key element in the plan was creating two covered, multi-level streets linked to a massive glass dome measuring 35m in diameter and 45m in height. A public square, covered entirely by the glass dome, serves as the hub of the entire area. Restaurants, cafes and entertainment facilities as well as public squares open around the clock to create social dynamism, transforming Belfast into a thriving city.
Victoria Square is Multi’s first completed scheme in the UK and has set the benchmark for Multi’s other projects in the region that include SouthGate, Bath which will open during 2010.
