Hammerson redevelopment plans come under MIPIM spotlight

Plans to breathe new life into one of Croydon’s main shopping hubs will be in the spotlight at an international trade fair next month. Hammerson, which this week submitted detailed proposals to the London Borough of Croydon for the redevelopment of its Centrale Shopping Centre, will be among the big name firms highlighting the town’s development potential at MIPIM 2012, in Cannes, France, from March 6 to 9.

The retail development giant is one of the main players in Develop Croydon, a private-sector led consortium, which will be striking deals with the most influential real estate professionals at the prestigious event. Proposals for Centrale, which Hammerson purchased in 2011, include creating two flagship units for fashion retailers, new restaurants plus a multi-screen cinema in the centre. Leslie Jones Architecture has drawn up the plans which feature the redesign of a significant section of internal retail space and the creation of a family-friendly quarter in the first phase of Hammerson’s long-term vision for retail in Croydon.

Lawrence Hutchings, UK Retail managing director for Hammerson plc, will be among the speakers explaining why Croydon is connected, capable and confident to potential investors during a panel discussion at MIPIM on Wednesday, March 7. Mr Hutchings said: “There has been significant underinvestment in Croydon’s retail core for some time with major brands missing from the town’s retail mix. “Croydon has one of the highest catchment spends in the UK and our proposals will deliver well designed space creating a new prime pitch for the town. There is a massive opportunity to put Croydon back on the map with both retailers and consumers and we want Centrale to lead this transformation. “We have a long-term vision for retail in the town and our repositioning of Centrale is the first step in putting Croydon firmly back in the top 10 of UK retail destinations.

“There is a strong retailer demand for well designed, modern retail space and our scheme offers a unique opportunity to bring new names to the town and create vibrant retail space.” Centrale is already home to major department stores Debenhams and House of Fraser and attracts more than 12m customers per year. Subject to planning consent, work could begin in early 2013 with the new leisure and restaurant quarter opening in autumn 2014. As well as Hammerson, the Develop Croydon delegation at MIPIM includes Abstract Group, Berkeley, CCURV, Guildhouse Rosepride LLP, Menta, RJ Witt Associates, Schroder Investment Management Ltd, Sinclair Clark, Stanhope plc and WT Partnership and is supported by the London Borough of Croydon.
